I NEED to Sleep

clip
I love reading books aloud to my daughter. The home school curriculum we use has a lot of read-alouds in it.

I have been a book lover from the time I was able to make sense of written words, so I thoroughly enjoy this part of the program. I enjoy curling up with Rachel over a good book and making it come alive as I read it.

That "coming alive" fun, however, doesn't always happen. One day earlier this week, I was reading one of these books to Rachel, and my habit of working until way too late at night caught up with me.

The story session degenerated into something like this. (I AM making up what follows. I was too sleepy at the time to recall exactly what crazy things I really said.)
We really liked our new teacher. She didn't teach us the same boring ways our old teachers had. She spiced things up like... She brought in...a microscope ... and let us ... look at ... the motorcycle ... that was flying ... ... ...ZZZ.
"Mommy! Mommy! Wake up!" Rachel bopped me on the shoulder. Startled awake, I continued.
She brought in a microscope and let us look ... at the little things ... that swim...around in...a blog post...
For some reason, I realized what I had said, and startled myself awake again.

"What am I even talking about? I'm sorry, Rachel. I'll have to read this later. Let's get out your math book. I'll take a nap while you work, and maybe we can finish the story after that. I'm just too tired to read right now."

There is definitely something wrong when I am that sleepy at 11:30 in the morning. I know the problem. I know the solution. I NEED TO SLEEP!

So, that is what I am going to do. It is just after 10:00 PM. I'll finish this post and try to get to bed by 10:30PM. Maybe if I do, the next time I read to Rachel, I won't be reading something like::
We peeked through the window ... and saw ... our new teacher... She ... was wearing ... blue jeans and ... a purple ...gecko ... on her ... head.
HUH?!?

  2. I've done this before as well. My kids think it's funny...I usually awake to two tiny "baby" blankets over my lap, and one of their stuffed animals. "We put you to bed, Daddy...they say."
