Life That Brings Joy

 Dark night under starry skies.
Humble shepherds huddling ‘round
     a fire’s warming blaze.
clip
Quiet conversation
     Shared struggle …shared frustration
          Shared hope…shared hopelessness.
               Shared sorrow.

Suddenly...
Bright light illumines the night sky!
     Bright beams of joy blaze
          'round about them!
Heaven’s shining visitor brings the news.
          “Good news of great joy
               for all people.”

The Life has come!
The long-awaited Life is born!
     Leave behind your sadness!
     Release your sorrow!
          Look to the Life!
          Look to the Joy!

clip
“For unto you is born today the Savior!”
Go, now! Search for Him!
With all your heart,
     seek for this Life
          that brings joy!
Joy unspeakable and full of glory.
     Unquenchable joy.
          Unstoppable joy.
                                                                       Undefeatable joy.

May our hearts be filled this joy.
May we truly KNOW this Life.
          May we always live
in the light of His joy!

Life That Brings Peace

clip

Into a world of chaos…
Into a world of questions…
Into a world of conflict and dissension…

Into a world like ours…
Came the Life.

Into OUR world…
          Came Peace.
Peace not dependent on an absence of chaos
Peace not dependent on an absence of all doubt.
Peace not dependent on an absence of conflict

clip
Into OUR world…

         Came Peace.
Peace that flows like a river
      through canyons of chaos.
Peace that wells up
      in the midst of
           crevasses of questions.
Peace that blows
      refreshing breezes
           through corridors of conflict.

This Life brought Peace.
A Peace that upholds us
          through the uncertainties of life.
A Peace that allows us to stand in the midst of a storm
that would otherwise cause us to bend and break.
A Peace that passes all understanding.

May this Life pour His Peace into your hearts and lives today.
as you open your hearts to Him.

Preoccupied or Prepared?

clip
The long-awaited Life was about to burst into human history. An entire nation had been watching and waiting for this Life. Yet strangely, most were not prepared to receive the Life when He finally came.

A few were prepared.

God’s angel paid a visit to a teenaged girl. When he told her that she was the chosen woman who would give birth to that Life, she was ready. She did not understand how it could happen. She did not comprehend why God would choose her. But her heart was prepared to receive and nurture that Life in her womb.

A humble carpenter was working toward the day when he and his bride would be joined in marriage. He too was among those awaiting the coming of the Life. When he first knew that his promised bride was expecting a child, he couldn’t comprehend what was happening. God’s angel visited him as well. Through a dream, this one was also prepared to play his part in nurturing, protecting, and being an earthly father to the Promised One.

Others were preoccupied.

Along with a host of other travelers, these two who were prepared approached the town of Bethlehem. It had been a long journey. They were dusty and travel-weary. They knew that the time was near for the Life to be brought into the world.

As they searched for a place to spend the night – a place for the Holy birth to take place – they found nothing. No room for the Long-Awaited One.

Most had no clue that He would come as a tiny baby born to a teenaged mother with a humble carpenter for a father. Had the imminent arrival of this Life been announced ahead of time with a trumpet fanfare, no doubt many would have made preparations for Him.

But the Life that approached Bethlehem came quietly. The busy, harried population of Bethlehem was preoccupied with the crowds that had descended on their town. They had no time for a young, weary pregnant woman or her child that would soon be born.

So the Life came quietly, humbly. Born in a stable. A feeding trough for animals was His first bed. The Life had come. Most were not prepared.

Are we any better prepared?

clip
We do not await the birth of the Long-Awaited One in the same way the carpenter and his teenaged wife did. But in this Advent season, perhaps we need to ask ourselves an important question. “Are we prepared to take into our hearts the fullness of that Life Whose birth we celebrate?”

Oh yes, we may believe that He came. We know why He came. We can say all the right things.

But are our hearts prepared to hear that still, small whisper of Life. Are we ready to allow that Life to permeate the deepest recesses of our hearts and bring His life into dry places.

Are we prepared to receive the healing and restoration that only that Life can bring?

Or are we, like the townspeople of Bethlehem, too busy with the busy-ness of our lives to even notice that the Life is right there at our hearts’ door, ready to come in and work His wonders?

Are we preoccupied? …Or are we prepared?

The Life That Brings Hope

clip
Down through the ages, the eyes of creation have been focused on one Life. This Life was promised long ago when death first extended its ugly tentacles to squeeze life out of a perfect Creation. This Life would bring light and hope back to a broken, shattered world.

Throughout history, many did not acknowledge this Life. Many did not realize the significance of this Life. But the promise of this Life, still reached out with hope to all.

Many others awaited the coming of this Life. They looked for it. They longed for it. They didn’t completely understand it, but they waited anyway – longing, hoping for its coming.

Then, the glorious news was given. The Life was about to come into the world at last! Hope rose anew in the hearts of those who were watching…waiting.

Hope. Blessed, glorious Hope.

On this side of history, we too have hope. Not merely hope for something that has not yet come, but hope that the power of that Life that burst into human history in Bethlehem so long ago is still at work in our world today.

clip
Hope for the lonely.
Hope for the grieving.
Hope for broken families.
Hope for broken lives.
Hope for hearts held captive by sin and darkness.
Hope for those whose hearts long for freedom.

Hope. Hope. Hope.

The hope we have on this side of history is focused on the Life that came into the world in a humble stable in a tiny town. A cross on a hill and an empty tomb saw that hope come into full reality.

Life…and Hope.                   Hope…and Life.

All of history, past, present, and future, derives its ultimate hope from that one, glorious Life.
That hope is there for each of us…freely available to all who reach out for Him.

May we all, this Advent season, reach out for the Life than brings us hope.

Heeding the Road Signs of Life

Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending a ladies' Bible study at the international church where I live. I cannot often make it to these events. My ministry with a children's home and home schooling my daughter make that study something I cannot do on a regular basis.

I attended yesterday because one of the ladies was being baptized after the study. The ladies were finishing up the last session of a Beth Moore study called Stepping Up. I cannot begin to share everything I learned from this session, I will will share the part that especially captured my attention.

Go to Amazon
In Jeremiah 31:21a we read:

Set up for yourself roadmarks,
Place for yourself guideposts;
Direct your mind to the highway,
The way by which you went.

(NASB)

Beth Moore asked us to consider the role of road signs we encounter in our life journey. SOme road signs we set up ourselves to help other people who come after us along the way.

However, there are road signs already there to help us in our journey. Beth asked us to consider three common road signs we see on a journey. What are they? I'd like to share my own "take-away" from this lesson.

clip
  • Sometimes, we all have attitudes that are less than mature and godly. Perhaps we gripe and complain, whinge and whine (in a grown-up way, of course...ahem) about how unfair something is, or how we aren't getting what we want.
We could be moving on in our journey with God, but we won't, because we insist on our own way first. You know how it goes. "I can't (translate "won't) do this until so-and-so does that." Am I the only one who has ever done this? I suspect not.

It is at times like these that we meet up with one of God's big old stop signs along the road. As Beth Moore put it, it is as if God gets right down there and looks us straight in the eye and says, "STOP IT!" Whatever we were whinging and whining about, we need to let it go. We cannot move on in our journey if we ignore this kind of a stop sign.

clip
  • The next sign is the Yield sign. This sign reminds us to submit to God's plans for us. This may mean laying down hopes and dreams that we have long cherished, a ministry that we love, or a relationship that we wanted to hang on to, even though it wasn't good for us.
I have been through a number of significant Yield moments in my life when I resisted letting go of the safe and secure in order to step out in the direction God was calling me. I am sure I will face these moments again.

An important point Beth made is that unless we let go of the things that encumber us, we will not be able to move ahead. The thing we need to let go of may not be a bad thing. In fact it may be very good. But if it is more than what God has for us to carry, we will be burdened.

For Beth, this meant giving up teaching a Sunday School class. I can't even begin to name all the things this has meant for me. We'd be here until New Years' Day at least. What would this look like for you?

clip
  • Finally, we come to the Caution sign. We know we''ve run across one of these when we spend time with God and deep in our hearts, He points out something to us and says, "Danger!" This may be a message on behalf of our children, our spouse, our friend, our church... ourselves.

When we realize that God has given us a caution sign, we'd better heed it. The sign is there for a reason.

We need to take careful notice of the road signs along our journey. We ignore these signs at our own peril if we are on a journey in the car. When we ignore God's road signs, we can expect things to not go well. If we heed them, we can journey in security and peace with Him!

What road signs is God showing you? What ones has He shown you in the past? Whether you heeded them or not, I am sure the experience taught you something. Why not take a moment to share what God taught you in a comment below.
